John Brown's Body

John Brown's Body
John Brown's Body is a reggae band from Boston, MA and Ithaca, NY that tours the world performing what the group calls “Future Roots Music”. The sound is rooted in reggae rhythms and blended with a variety of other styles including dub, electronic, funk, ska, hip-hop, and dubstep.

Originally deep-rooted in the more traditional roots and foundation of Reggae that helped build their reputation as a serious act, their music (starting in 2003) began to take a direction toward a more modern, spaced-out sound with an occasional blend of the traditional when Elliot Martin took over as lead singer. All Music Guide credited Elliot Martin as writing “the most gorgeous melodies in all of modern reggae music…"

As such, the band’s sound has been described by the New York Daily News as being "more Massive Attack than Marley" and by the Village Voice "reverent and revolutionary at the same time,” a nod to their futuristic take on reggae music and their ability to put a unique twist on the genre.

John Brown’s Body has performed with a variety of groups, representing a wide-range of genres including well-known acts such as: Dave Matthews Band, The Flaming Lips, STS9, Furthur, Ozomatli, Broken Social Scene, and Jurassic 5.

Thousands of One

Thousands of One
In the spirit of the funk Movement... in the spirit of edutainment... in the spirit of the real revolutionaries and the history of mountain moving music groups, the message of Thousands of One is a call to end racism, to grow our own food, and the call is to create unity. Turning heads with intense lyricism, wit and dope phrasing - the soul and voice of Jhakeem Haltom can cut glass as well as illusions, turning a phrase whether singing falsetto a la Marvin Gaye or spitting verse like KRS-One. He has been easily compared to Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, Talib Kweli and Bob Marley. The original sound that Thousands of One has crafted cuts a deep groove, while paying tribute to soul, funk, rock and reggae... Thousands of One further mixes these influences with Hiphop, gospel, electronica, afrobeat, dub. A bomb-dropping, low-end heavy drum and bass buoy socially conscious lyrics, while the saxophone performances of Mark Wienand evoke . Guitar player Jake Roberts, son of cello freejazz pioneer, Hank Roberts, plays guitar with simultaneous machine gun precision and a sense of wild abandon. On the keyboards, Chad Lieberman, bending notions of melody and rhythm into completely new forms, lights a fire in the music that is bright and powerful.

Zack Deputy

Zack Deputy
On his upcoming release Another Day (Eusonia Records, 2011), Zach Deputy demonstrates his extraordinary ability to perform and record in multiple contexts and conveys the sensibilities of a mature singer/songwriter. Another Day offers another look at Zach Deputy and seeks to help him cross over into other audiences. Rich with ballads and mid-tempo songs, the music on this recording is best described as soulful rhythm and blues, with flavors of Al Green, Taj Mahal and Stevie Wonder emerging in the swells, changes and modulations of the music, in the voice and even in the lyrical content. The record will appeal to fans of contemporary artists like Jack Johnson and Amos Lee, but the origins of the style and feel remain classic. Another Day is an appropriately titled album, and it is truly an album in the classic sense—a collection of songs that come from the same time and place, inspired by the same muse. Reflective and introspective, it provides a glimpse at the soul of an artist and the depth of a songwriter. Full of hope and anticipation of the promise of another day, a new day, it is a pivotal point in the career of a touring musician. Whereas it is a departure for Zach Deputy, it is one that he feels confident his fans can relate to, but it isn’t the end in itself. Deputy’s multi-faceted diamond gets one side polished in this offering, and it is a side that will shine brightly for a new audience.

Dar Williams

Dar Williams
Williams’ greatest gift as a writer is her ability to get inside the heads of her characters, no matter how removed their mindsets and values are from her own, doing so with consistent and sometimes surprising compassion, exemplified by the dysfunctional extended family of “The Christians and the Pagans” (from her second album, 1996’s Mortal City, and newly recorded during the acoustic sessions) and the true believer of “Teen for God” (from her sixth LP, 2005’s My Better Self ).

At the core of Williams’ work is a belief in the innate ability of people to make a better world, the product of countless observations in her travels and conversations with her fans. If anything, her optimism has intensified as she’s crisscrossed America during the tough times of recent years. “My big secret,” she says, with a twinkle in her eye, “is that we are gonna make it — but we’ll be the last to know.”
