Mammox

Mammox
Mammox formed in April 2009 with Mark C. Aylward (vocals), Nate Belasco (keyboards), James Staub (bass), and Zachary Zukowski (drums). The four members met at Northeastern University while studying Music Technology.

Together they introduce a psychedelic collaged sound rooted in hip-hop, glitch, electronic, and world music. Because of their unique musical style, they unlock an entirely new genre of music. In attempt to describe their music, the band stated

“We are not merely fusing styles–hybrid groups are nothing new. We are breathing new life into the music we sample by mixing it with our own instrumental improvisation and Mark’s distinctive wordplay.”

Not only is their music unconventional, their entire band process has also strayed from the ordinary. They created an album first, learned their songs on traditional instruments afterward, and, lastly, picked a band name–a very backwards process for many, if not all, artists.

Unlike many laptop music artists, Mammox is raising the bar in regards to live performances. Although the music is largely composed of samples, the band performs with a combination of traditional instruments and live electronics.

Afroman

Afroman
Stoner/rapper Joseph Foreman, aka Afroman, returns to Ithaca, this time with a new record under his belt. Frobama: Head of State is a 25-track album that showcases all the different activities Afroman does best: smoking out, drinking Colt 45, pimpin’ and partying. On his Web site, the front of the album shows Afroman raising his hand as if being proudly sworn in “to preside over all your good times.” Afroman’s number one single of all time, “Because I Got High,” is still popular and was No. 13 on Billboard’s Top 100 in 2001 when relseased. It was featured on none other than Howard Stern’s radio show and in movies such as Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Disturbia and The Perfect Score. There is a new version of this Grammy-nominated hit single with different lyrics on Frobama: Head of State.

Thousands of One

Thousands of One
A band born to change society through music, Thousands of One core members' first gig was in a maximum security youth prison. At one point, lead singer, Jhakeem Haltom gave the mic to one of the inmates who let his voice be heard. It was a defining moment for the band.

Conscious music, revolution sounds, liberation time!

Something deep happens when dedication to social change meets the burning desire to make amazing music. We give thanks for being alive! We give thanks that we can travel this beautiful road! We give thanks for a million things, and do our human best to put it into music.

This is the essence of Thousands of One - to build connections between people and live inspired lives, striving to bring that inspiration into the world around us.

Gaining notoriety for their spirited live shows throughout the nation, Thousands of One jumps from activist/retro soul - think Olu Dara or Marvin Gaye - to cross Atlantic afrobeat/funk jams as in Fela Kuti meets James Brown- to underground Hiphop a la The Roots or Talib Kweli with a funk rock edge.

Missionary Lizards

Missionary Lizards
Take a cup of classic rock, a pinch of pop, a ration of reggae, a filling of funk, a jar of jam, an angstrom of alt. country, and you might come close to what you'll hear at a Missionary Lizards show. Soulful and sometimes playful covers and urgent, honest originals are woven together by the talent of musicians who know that collaboration is paramount to showmanship, though each band member could dazzle an audience by themselves. The point of getting together and making Missionary Lizards is to have fun, and that's exactly what the band gives to the audience at each show - a fun, raucous, rock and roll experience!

Rubblebucket

Rubblebucket
... a cutting edge ten-piece afrobeat/rock band led by trumpeter Alex Toth and fronted by alluring vocalist Kalmia Traver. Comparisons have been drawn to Portishead, Fela Kuti, Bjork and James Brown, but Rubblebucket's genre-bending, neo-psychedelic soul experience is beyond classification. In addition to winning Relix Magazine's Jam-Off competition in July 2008, Rubblebucket was recently named "Best New Band of 2008," by Seven Days Vermont.

One of the most exciting groups to come out of Boston in recent memory...a genre-mashing maelstrom of hot-blooded West African funk rhythms and scorching soul melodies unlike anything that’s come before it. - Dan Bolles, Seven Days.

Rubblebucket Orchestra is not your Mamma’s foot-tapping funk band. These guys are a flat-out “move everything” kind of groove. - Ryan’s Smashing Life

Their youthful exuberance is matched with skill, and they remind you, or inform you, that it’s all right to let your guard down and leave your snarky baggage at the door. Listening to Rubblebucket is a moment in time when you feel like everything is going to work out. You feel that spirit. - Mike McKinley, State of Mind

Scythian
Rousing and raucous, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays kicked-up Celtic and world music with hints of Gypsy and Klezmer, all infused with a touch of punk-rock sensibility. Take a pair of classically trained dueling fiddlers, toss in a rhythm guitar and the occasional funky accordion, then power it with the driving rhythm of a jazz percussionist, and you've got the ingredients for a show you won't soon forget. Their high-energy, adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of music has one goal in mind; to get people on their feet and dancing. Their repertoire ranges from traditional and contemporary Celtic and folk music to the alluring and dramatic strains of Gypsy and Eastern European tunes, and then crosses back over the border to pick up some good old-fashioned bluegrass licks.

Lucid

Lucid
Barreling out of the northern woods like a grizzly bear on speed, Lucid, the hardest working band in the North Country (Upstate NY and VT), careens across the musical spectrum as a V8 blend of genres emerge- from jazz to rock, honky-tonk blues to reggae. Formed in 2003, the latest album from the sextet, “Dewdmanwah”, was released this past fall to regional acclaim in the northeast. With 2010 aimed at being their breakthrough year, keyboardist Andy Deller looks forward to gracing the country with a healthy dose of Adirondack soul and passion. “Our sound is catchy yet eclectic. The songs get stuck in your head, and there is a very distinct tone,” said Deller. “The influences and the styles we play are wide ranging. But always at the center of it all is a thick thread of rock tying everything together. Our music has a little something for everybody. Audiences all over are very appreciative. We get applause, we get hooting and hollering, and sometimes nakedness. They’re always dancing.” Read more: http://www.myspace.com/rulucid#ixzz0yOskdsAb

Future Rock / Orchard Lounge

Future Rock / Orchard Lounge
Future Rock
Mickey Kellerman and Felix Moreno, alongside drummer Darren Heitz, are the driving force behind Future Rock. During their explosive live show, all three members wield synthesizers, live loops and samples-Kellerman on the keys, Moreno on the bass, Heitz on drums-to form an amalgamation of excitement, constructed completely live onstage. The Chicago trio has been perfecting its brand of live-instrument dance music since 2004 and-just like Future Rock’s pulsating and escalating anthems-their momentum is about to explode. Their live remixes of Black Moth Super Rainbow and Death from Above 1979 are sweeping proof of Future Rock’s remarkable remix skills. But that’s not all.

Orchard Lounge

Downtempo, space disco, house, tech, b-boy era electro, hip hop, soul, and funk... if you can move, Orchard Lounge will back you up. Formed in Chicago in 2000, OL is the collective of Ben Silver, Spencer Lokken and Bethany Lokken. This versatile trio has enlightened dance floors nationwide with their eclectic mixes, from sunset chill-out to bass-dropping tech house, and an array of other futuristic sounds. Theirs is a democratic mission: to expose as many people as possible to the artists they admire and respect. What sets Orchard Lounge apart from other club DJs is, well, you won't always find them in the club. In recent years they've built a reputation as a hard-touring festival act and set-break crowd favorite, frequently supporting The Disco Biscuits, Sound Tribe Sector 9, The New Deal and Future Rock. They've also played alongside heavyweights like Bonobo, Lindstrom, DJ T, Jamie Jones, Booka Shade, Metro Area, and Kevin Yost. As The Disco Biscuits' de facto hype men (and woman), they've had the rare pleasure of performing for thousands at world famous venues like Red Rocks and the Hammerstein Ballroom, constantly keeping the crowd engaged with a unique mix of turntable and live-band improvisation.

John Coltrane's Birthday feat. WINGNUT and more...

John Coltrane's Birthday feat. WINGNUT and more...
Coltrane was arguably the most influential musician in modern jazz, both technically and spiritually. Recording for the first time under Dizzy Gillespie, Coltrane gained recognition as a member of Miles Davis’ remarkable quintet, recording the seminal Kind of Blue (Columbia Records). A brief period with Thelonious Monk in 1957 effectively signaled the start of Coltrane’s career as a leader; and, over the next ten years his quartet – with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones – brought about a seismic shift in jazz harmony, making use of every tonal distortion and timbral effect. Coltrane’s subsequent ensembles – often featuring Eric Dolphy, Rashied Ali, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, among others – released and performed some of the most radical and exploratory music in jazz. Pivotal albums such as A Love Supreme, Giant Steps, and Interstellar Space remain legendary accomplishments. This event will commemorate and continue Coltrane’s legacy through unique performances featuring musicians who continue to explore and celebrate the outer boundaries of jazz and improvisation. We invite you to join us as we pay tribute to John Coltrane.

Eilen Jewell

Eilen Jewell
presented by ROOTABAGA BOOGIE

"BUTCHER HOLLER" tribute to Loretta Lynn climbing the Americana charts; Boston Globe critic calls it "a deft...irrestistible...tribute "

Boise, Idaho native EILEN JEWELL has become a genuine force in the world of roots music here in the U.S. and Europe, too. Her homespun sound threads together old-school country, jazzy blues and Sun Records rockabilly. The Boston Globe said, "The slow organic sway of her melodies, and the sensual way she rubs against the low end of her register, will remind some of Gillian Welch. Also like Welch, her writing is both intimate and vivid, classically framed and closely observed."

On her newest album (released July 27 and already in the #18 position on the Americana radio charts), Eilen pays tribute to groundbreaking country icon Loretta Lynn, a woman Jewell describes as a national treasure: "We pay homage to her humble roots and straightforward, hard-hitting performance style," say Jewell. "All of the songs in this collection were written by Lynn herself and are a testament not only to her strength as a songwriter but to her personal strength as well. In the 60's and 70's, Loretta Lynn dared to write songs about topics that were widely considered off-limits, especially for women. The fact that her words still hit a nerve today is proof of their timelessness."

Butcher Holler's twelve sharply delivered performances - nearly all under three minutes each - feature a handful of Lynn classic hits such as "Ain't Woman Enough (to Take My Man)" and "Don't Come Home Drinkin' (with Lovin' On Your Mind)", songs that helped define Lynn as a pioneer in music that praised strong-willed, confident women. Jewell also digs up lesser known tracks from the extensive Lynn songbook, presenting them with her own expressive vocals and backed by her crackerjack band. It's exactly the same set of fine musicians whose work on the 2009 album Sea of Tears propelled Eilen deeper into rockabilly and early rock n roll territory. Sea of Tears was one the top albums of 2009 on many American radio stations (as well as a couple in Europe and Australia), it earned Eilen Female Artist of the year and Album of the Year honors on the Freeform American Roots chart. She tours and records with guitarist Jerry Miller, drummer Jason Beek, and upright bassman Johnny Sciascia, formerly of the Tarbox Ramblers.

If you caught Eilen’s Grassroots Fest performance at the dance tent or at one of her other Rootabaga Boogie shows here, you’ll understand the buzz about this young singer-songwriter who delivers barroom tales and old-is-new-again melodies with a no-frills sensuality. When Signature Sounds president Jim Olson first heard her play, he was “….completely knocked out” by her distillation of country, folk, and blues. "She hits that sweet spot between Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Billie Holiday," Olsen says. Jewell and her band have been touring hard, in Europe three times this year. and to Australia twice. Recent milestones include opening for Loretta Lynn and in addition to honors listed above for her current album, Sea of Tears, her previous album also earned a place among the Americana Music Association's top 100 albums of 2007. Letters from Sinners and Strangers, in fact, turned up on many year-end “top 10” lists and the Boston Phoenix said, “These Letters are dust-coated tributes to twangy old-time folk, tear-soaked country ballads, and devil-may-care romps.” Wrote Yankee Magazine, "It's easy to see why she’s so well received. Eilen's sultry, world-weary sound brings a much needed sense of sincerity to the land of steel guitars and cowboy boots…”

The Big Mean Sound Machine
Live Experimental & Electronic Afro-Beat, Funk, and Dub. The Sound Machine is constant groove. A 10 piece Afro-Dub Explosion that creates excitement, depth and a pulse. A mix of original tunes and classics with a new perspective, this group is sure to catch your attention!

This group is inspired by the music of yesterday, today and tomorrow, looking for ideas from the past, the present and into the future to help shape the Sound Machine. The original tunes created by the group are very much a testament to the evolution of music, throw back appeal and an original style spanning multiple genres. The covers played are carefully chosen and often different than the originals, influenced heavily by the band’s need to reinterpret the music we love and create a pulsating rhythm throughout an entire show. Expect to dance those pants!

Ryan Montbleau Band

Ryan Montbleau Band
Averaging over 200 gigs per year for the past few years, Ryan Montbleau Band has generated the kind of buzz that only surrounds a talented artist on the verge.

Emerging onto the national music scene from his home base of Boston, Ryan Montbleau has been described as something of a Martin Sexton by way of Van Morrison and Stevie Wonder. Yet Ryan Montbleau Band’s music is difficult to pigeon-hole or neatly categorize. It is original yet familiar—a fresh sound full of firmly-rooted ingredients, including Americana, folk, blues, ragtime and ’70’s R&B and soul. Whereas the band’s intriguing instrumentation and arrangements (not to mention top notch chops) help to create this unique sound, all is firmly anchored by Montbleau’s water-tight lyrics and unmistakable voice.

Having begun his career playing Boston’s coffee shops and folk venues as a solo artist with an infectious, percussive, fingerpicking guitar style, the charismatic Ryan Montbleau has evolved into the front man for the eclectic ensemble that bears his name. Make no mistake—this is a band in every sense of the word and is powered by the dynamics of Matt Giannaros (acoustic upright bass, electric bass, vocals), Laurence Scudder (viola), Jason Cohen (piano, organ, clavinet, Rhodes, Moog) and James Cohen (drums).

Their first collective album, One Fine Color, was released on Valentine’s Day, 2006 and shows a cohesive vision rarely seen among young artists today. Several thousand copies have sold so far and the album has been raved about by music lovers of all types and, perhaps most notably, all ages (from senior citizens to infants and everyone in between). One Fine Color showcases the timeless songwriting, invigorating energy, and humble, honest sincerity that has allowed Ryan Montbleau Band to expand its passionate fan base one show, and one listen at a time.

This combination of art and personality creates that magical bond between performer and audience that Ryan Montbleau Band is fortunate to have in these cynical times. Sustaining the band through the years as they toured incessantly, virtually living on the road, they have already established a large, passionate following throughout the country.

Bear in Heaven

Bear in Heaven
“Bear in Heaven’s greatest trick is creating music that evokes the sort of physicality and scope that could soundtrack a Hollywood film, but also works equally well at stirring up intimate bodily passion” – Pitchfork Best New Music

“Bear in Heaven have shown themselves to be a major creative force. Their invention and imagination, mingled with their astute pop nous have combined to produce an album which is fit to stand toe to toe with most that will be released this year. There is so much to enjoy here”. - Drowned In Sound

Twin Sister
... The music moves us in multiple ways, giving us many different embraces and coos along the trail and Estella is a captivating and engaging front woman. She prowls a stage seductively and treats her lyrics in a similar way – prowling after them, if you will – and handing them over with hot breath and all of the right drops of warmth and sugar. On “I Want A House,” she sings, “I want a house/Built of old wood/You could paint it any color you like/Just as long as I can live with you,” and what could be read as an easy line of basic human wanting is actually turned into a husky and complex piece of substantial depth. It reaches for us as we reach to touch it and it’s at that intersection where the exchange is made and we’re not just listening anymore, we’re feeling as we should be feeling, as the band would like us to be feeling. We’re companions on this song, in the way the words find us and in the way that we’re willing to be engaged. Be ready for this to happen a lot with these five. – Daytrotter

Locos Por Juana

Locos Por Juana
Every year The GrassRoots Festival introduces us to new national acts that we absolutely have to get on our stage too (for instance Scythian, Eilen Jewell, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, and plenty more)!

This year Locos Por Juana had us going crazy with TWO awesome sets! We are truly psyched to have them back at Castaways and can't wait to introduce them to anyone who didn't happen to catch them earlier this summer. This a a "don't miss" show for sure.

Locos Por Juana (aka Latin Urban Orchestra) is coined as Miami's Best Latin Alternative band and has received awards and recognitions for Best Band of Miami (Miami New Times), Best US Band (BBC News), Billboard Hot Pick (Billboard Magazine) and has also been featured as Buzzworthy Video (MTV Español).

Additionally, their previous albums (as an independent band) were nominated to Premio Lo Nuestro in 2003 for Best Urban Artist and the Latin Grammy Awards in 2005 for Best Rock Album, and 2008 Grammy Award Nonimee for Best Latin Alternative Album.

Saturday Oct 02

The Rozatones

The Rozatones
The band serves up funk and rock in the finest tradition of Jamiroquai, No Doubt and the Chili Peppers, and flavors their songs with jazz, bossa, blues, or any morsel of musical goodness that suits the song. This could be said of lots of emerging bands in America; the difference here is the musicianship and exquisite judgment the band uses. Blending genres is one thing. Blending them into danceable, sing-along-able songs that are stuck in your head for weeks at a time is The Rozatones' specialty. It's likely that the sweaty, dancing kids at the band's hometown shows have no idea how good they have it.

At centerstage is one Revi Roza, a guitar-slinging chanteuse who sings straight from the heart over her guitar's slinky funk lines. Her songs have it all: organic and sophisticated, deeply personal and relatable. Onstage, her starpower commands your attention, but the the five cats behind her are stiff competition. The band consists of Miles Crettien (bass) Sam Podell (sax), Mikey Conerty (trumpet), Adam Gold (keys), Byard Duncan (drums), and Emanuel Washington (drums). The 'Tones have a natural energy that buoys the skin-tight musical arrangements into a thrilling live experience. They don't cut corners (real horns, clav, and rhodes piano onstage see to that), they don't phone it in, and they deliver musical chops that leave you feeling good, not just impressed.

Guitarist / songwriter Mike Delledera and his band are having an amazing time filling the landscape with rock, blues, jazz, catchy songs and doses of twisted improvisations. An alchemy of guitar, piano, bass, drums and vocal harmonies propels the listener into a wild adventure of musical imagination.

*Originally from Syracuse, NY (Go Orange!), Mike studied jazz improvisation and arranging at Ithaca College, and upon moving to NYC, he studied rock/pop guitar and composition with Carlos Alomar (guitarist for David Bowie). He has shared the stage with RUSTED ROOT, TEA LEAF GREEN, RA RA RIOT, STRANGEFOLK, THE BIG WU, THE BREAKFAST, DJ LOGIC, and more!

beat the grid

beat the grid
Beat the Grid is a 10 piece experimental rock group based out of Ithaca, NY. The sound puts an emphasis on the "beat" with deep roots in Afro-Cuban, Jazz and Funk. The group was originally formed as an electronic music duo. Since expanding, Beat the Grid has allowed their influences to expand as well. With a new vision and a new vibe the BEAT will make sure you keep your feet moving all night.

The Kevin Kinsella Trio
Watching Kevin Kinsella perform is to witness a genuine purveyor of “thanks & praise” music, whether he’s performing love songs with an acoustic guitar or re-energizing loyal fans with his latest band.

Born in Ithaca, New York, Kevin’s origins didn’t prevent him from becoming an internationally celebrated roots reggae performer. A prolific songwriter from the age of fifteen, Kevin’s reggae songs sound highly genuine, yet with an originality that defies pretentiousness.

Lost Sailors
Lost Sailors have been playing for over 12 years, has performed over 400 shows, and is widely considered to be the premier interpretive Grateful Dead tribute band in Upstate N.Y. We've built a solid reputation for high-energy, carefully-crafted, and unpredictable performances, as well as the most consistently enjoyable club sound production around.

Their shows follow the Grateful Dead's traditional two-long-sets format, with a wide-ranging mix of rock, folk, blues, and country-pickin', mainly electric with some acoustic treatments. Improvisational jams are punctuated by sweet ballads and classic show stoppers. Music people of all ages and tastes love to listen and dance to.

The Thermals

The Thermals
The Thermals have recently released their fourth and possibly best album to date, Now We Can See. After an amicable split with Sub Pop, the band has signed with the iconic Northwest label Kill Rock Stars, recently relocated to Portland, Oregon. Now We Can See was recorded by John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, Polyphonic Spree) again at Supernatural, and at Congleton's studio Elmwood in Dallas, Texas. NWCS is full of the hi-fi power for which Congleton is famous, and continues The Thermals' tradition of raw punk energy combined with brilliant melodies and intelligent lyrics. Hutch and Kathy recorded NWCS the same way they did TBTBTM: as a duo, with Foster acting as a one-woman rhythm section for the entire record. Westin Glass joined The Thermals soon after the recording was completed, to become the fourth drummer for The Thermals, sixth if you count Harris and Foster. Please insert your own Spinal Tap joke here, thanks.

The Thermals are most famous for discovering a fourth chord in pop-punk. It's F#minor, in case you were wondering. The Thermals have also made many fine contributions to rock journalism, including the terms no-fi, some-fi, mid-fi, post-pop-punk, pre-post-punk, neo-grunge, post-power-pop, i.d.w.t.d.i.m. (i don't want to do it myself) and s.e.d.i.f.y.(somebody else does it for you).

Cymbals Eat Guitars
"Staten Island band Cymbals Eat Guitars came out of seemingly nowhere when, a little under a month ago, their debut album, Why There Are Mountains, was bestowed Pitchfork's "Best New Music" honor. Who were these guys? Staten Island, seriously? They were, of course, four hustling musicians who'd struck gold on the songwriting front, crafting a beastly, obtuse album that sounds a lot like Built To Spill, if Built To Spill actually had some youth on their side and could still throw down in a street fight or get upset over a girl." -- RCRD LBL

"Why There Are Mountains may be one of the best 'indie' (the album is self-released, so, y'know, actually 'indie') albums of the year. And with the major label skyline being obliterated like something out of Independence Day, it's time to batten down the hatches." -- NME

Bowerbirds

Bowerbirds
Bowerbirds’ debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse, was nearly one hundred percent focused on the thesis that the earth is a sacred place with merit beyond us, and that humans are just visitors here. Its contrapuntal harmonies documented a moment in the life of the songwriter and the life of the band – Beth Tacular and Phil Moore living in an airstream in rural North Carolina, building a cabin of reclaimed boards by hand in the woods – but did so without, as far as we could tell, delving into their lives at all. While these weren’t protest songs, per se, they had the wry anger of a ‘Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.’ The songs were interconnected, both musically and thematically, a musical whitepaper of the very best, most listenable kind.

So it was a big surprise when we heard the songs collected on Upper Air. Bowerbirds were revealing more, writing from a personal voice, exploring love and human emotions in ways that have never been fully fleshed-out in their songwriting before. They have not abandoned their worldview from Hymns, but the lyrics are no longer just observational. These are songs written from a personal place, examining the contradictions inherent to a conscious life, and this emotional depth makes for an undeniably powerful collection of songs.

Live Music!

The Black Walnut Band
The Black Walnut Band originated as a group of musicians participating in a demo recording project who now continue to perform the songs from that project as a band. The majority of the project was recorded in the winter and spring of 2008. Dustin and Jen first performed at the Pourhouse in Trumansburg in late spring. After a handful of performances in the fall, the Band culminated and assumed an official lineup and title in time for the December performance at the Lost Dog, opening for Urban Horse Thieves. In the year since, the band has played numerous local cafes, restaurants, clubs, and a barn or two. In such a short time, the Black Walnut Band have earned a reputation as a must see live act that plays a convergence of styles that is unmistakably their own. Members of the band include performers from several Ithaca area acts which further contributes to the band's blending of musical influences. The Black Walnut Band are currently recording in the studio and hope to release a cd in the coming year.

Rustic Overtones

Rustic Overtones
Rustic Overtones' new music reflects not only the band's newfound independence, but also their greater maturity. "We've always drawn from our experiences while writing our songs," says Gutter. "It's great to be back together and do that again. But we've also become better musicians and refined our own styles of writing and performing over these past five years, and we'd all heard each other's work, which raised the bar a little for us all... Getting back to that feeling, with somewhat more developed taste and musicianship, has been really good."

Jimkata

Jimkata
Just when you think you've heard it all, Jimkata has emerged from the depths of the modern collective conscience to convince you otherwise. Members Evan Friedell (lead vocals/guitar), Aaron Gorsch (guitar/keys/vocals), Dave Rossi (bass/vocals) and Packy Lunn (drum kit/vocals) have set out to create a sound that is both new and timeless.

Described as "one of the best up-and-coming bands" by jambase.com, Jimkata can best be described as electro-rock. Combining hair-raising rock and roll with an industrial touch of synthesizers, the sound has powerful momentum and their songs leave permanent impressions. While this four piece is inspired by the world of improvisational and progressive music, Jimkata focuses on song structure, textures, layers and vibrant lyrics.

Ten Year Vamp
Ten Year Vamp Opens For Aerosmith...
8/27/2010
"Ten Year Vamp, a six-piece band that boasts of all New York state musicians, rocked the crowd with vigor and style. Led by charismatic lead singer Debbie Gabrione, Ten Year Vamp delivered a solid, soaring string of songs from the album “Don’t Act Like You Don’t Know Me.” Gabrione stalked the stage, at times hopping up and down and at other times pacing left and then right. All the while, she let the crowd know exactly how she felt with the smooth and rich vocals to “Pleasures (That I Call Mine),” “Rockstar,” “Faked It” and “One Night Ticket.” She’s got star power aplenty."

John Brown's Body

John Brown's Body
John Brown’s Body’s “Future Roots” uses reggae as a foundation, but incorporates dub, drum and bass, dancehall, hip hop and other musical experiments and exploration to create a sound both timeless and forward. However it’s defined, it’s got people buzzing about this progressive band from Boston and Ithaca, NY. The New York Daily News called them “reverent and revolutionary.” Their latest album, Amplify, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Reggae Chart. The 8-piece band’s killer live show has super heavy rhythms, a three piece horn section, air tight drum and bass and “the most gorgeous melodies in all of modern reggae music” [All Music Guide], all backed by a dubbed-out sound engineer.

“Amplify is a daring record with an overall vision to avoid the rut that North American reggae bands often find themselves unable to climb out of…the sound of a band recreated, retooled and refreshed.”
- Exclaim Magazine [Canada]

“JBB is an eight-piece outfit that delivers some of the most forward-thinking reggae music in the world today.”
- LA2DAY

“Their stage presence is something to be witnessed. No member goes unnoticed. The bassist moves to his steady beats. A focused drummer‚ bouncing keyboardist‚ and a grooving guitar player make up the colorful background. Adding to all that are three intense horn players moving and grooving up front along with an emotive‚ charismatic lead singer leaving no shortage of visual stimulus onstage.”

Sarah Harmer

Sarah Harmer
The first sound you’ll hear on oh little fire is a high-pitched keening, like the shrieking of an unattended phone, or the distant skirling of a ghost on a winter night.

Suddenly, Sarah Harmer’s band kicks in, with drums propelling a gust of rock more forceful than anything she’s played since her mid-‘90s days with rambunctious Kingston rockers Weeping Tile. She sings with a sense of purpose: “A new wind will blow through everything / Through everything I know.”

...oh little fire is, sonically, Harmer’s most fully realized album; its layers of textures, from ear-tingling atmospherics to gut kicking power chords, complement the deceptive complexity of her songs. Whether she’s channeling Neil Young through Teenage Fanclub on the likes of “Late Bloomer” or floating away on a stream of Julie Fader’s backing vocals on the evanescent closer, “It Will Sail,” Harmer is always offering new pathways for the listener to explore. Throughout, her voice, clear and precisely emotive, is the beacon that guides you on your way.

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band
There aren’t a lot of Warped Tour vets who can claim proficiency in the use of washboards, bottleneck slides and five-gallon buckets. Most didn’t spend their teens playing along to Charlie Patton and Bukka White albums. And just about none are fronted by a commissioned member of the Honorary Order of Kentucky Colonels. But the Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, who appeared for two weeks on the 2009 Warped Tour and will be on the entire 2010 tour, are all that and more. With wild sing-a-longs and flaming washboards, their live shows have been converting skeptics left and right.

Now, with the May 25 release of “The Wages,” the soulful, swinging country-blues trio proves they’re more than just a world class live band. Their second album for SideOneDummy Records, it was produced by Paul Mahern (Zero Boys, John Mellencamp) and recorded in the band’s Big Damn Tradition: live in the studio with no overdubs on honest-to-goodness analog tape. Appropriate to our times, “The Wages” is thematically rooted in the blues tradition of hard-bitten reality matched with enduring optimism. There are songs that deal with crystal meth abuse and the disappearance of the American family farm (“In a Holler Over There”), the cost of living (“Everything’s Raising”), unrequited love (“Sure Feels Like Rain”) and, of course, murder (“Lick Creek Road”). But the Reverend’s brood also celebrates rural life on “Born Bred Corn Fed,” serves up danceable sing-a-longs like “Clap Your Hands,” and offers renewed hope for hard times in “Just Getting By.”

The Big Damn Band is very much a family affair, with the good reverend on finger-style resonator guitar and lead vocals, his wife “Washboard” Breezy Peyton on washboard and vocals, and distant cousin Aaron “Cuz” Persinger on drums and bucket. The band’s home base is deep in the hills of Southern Indiana’s Brown County, which boasts a population of 14,957. (Or 14,954 when the band’s out on the road playing close to 250 gigs a year, including appearances at the Austin City Limits festival and tours with Flogging Molly, Derek Trucks, and Clutch.)

“I grew up in the country, and rural life and rural culture has shaped me and my music,” says Reverend Peyton, who really is a Kentucky Colonel, just like Elvis Presley, Roy Rogers and Tiger Woods. “I have been playing music since I was a little kid. I am pretty sure we are on to something now.”

That combination of authenticity and originality is evident throughout “The Wages,” driven by the trio’s big damn vocals and melodies, gutbucket guitar playing, and foot-stomping rhythms, all in service of songs that are honest and moving, devoid of irony or artifice.

“We may be few in numbers, but we sound big,” says Washboard Breezy. “And I think we stand for something big too. Even if sometimes it’s just that it is okay to be a regular person.”

The Felice Brothers

The Felice Brothers
The Felice Brothers and their long time friends and band mates Greg Farley and Christmas Clapton, come to us from the Catskill Mountains, where a homegrown sound has been working its way through the bloodlines for generations. Their rambling journey so far has brought them from busking in New York City subway stations, to tours across the world that have included enthusiastically received performances at major music festivals including Bonnaroo, All Points West, Outside Lands, and Langerado.

A defining memory to date might be their appearance at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival. A summer afternoon thunderstorm rolled in and began to douse the land. While it electrified the atmosphere, the rain had the adverse effect of cutting power to The Felice Brother's stage. After many assurances that power would be restored, The Felice Brothers were informed it was a lost cause, and that they'd have to make due. Without hesitation the band jumped down off the stage and began playing acoustic while stomping around barefoot in the mud that had formed on account of the ongoing downpour. What might have led some to call it a wash and leave was turned into another epic show that drew upon the familiarity and casual ease of the backyard bbq sessions that took place at their dad's porch on Sunday afternoons during their first days as a group. The audience that day, like others before and after, left utterly converted.

Titled with a phrase drawn from the pages of Mark Twain, Yonder Is The Clock is a nod to all of the American ghosts that lend their narrative and characters to the Felice Brothers' April 7th release. Their studio was built from the remains of an abandoned chicken coop and it was there over the summer and fall of 2008 that they wrote and recorded this new collection of songs. Presented by Team Love Records, Yonder Is The Clock is teaming with tales of love, death, betrayal, baseball, train stations, phantoms, pandemics, jail cells, rolling rivers and frozen winter nights. This is music that hasn't lost sight of the history of the land from which it came, and that quality alone makes The Felice Brothers the next great American band.

Seth Winters w/ Jerry Depizzo (O.A.R.)

Seth Winters w/ Jerry Depizzo (O.A.R.)
Young Folks: A Conversation with Seth Winters and O.A.R.s Jerry DePizzo

Seth Feinberg frequented the New York-area club scene as a pre-teen and, before he scored his drivers license, had already performed with the likes of Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Merl Saunders and Bernie Worrell, as well as the members of moe., Deep Banana Blackout and the Spin Doctors. Almost a decade later, Feinberg has returned to the live music scene a mature, confident 24-year old performing under the name Seth Winters. In the intervening time, he’s relocated to Atlanta and back to New York, overcome a series of health problems and formed an all-star band anchored by Spin Doctors drummer Aaron Comess. He’s also recently started collaborating with O.A.R. saxophonist Jerry DePizzo, who recently performed with Winters in Atlanta and contributed to the young guitarist’s debut studio album. Before their upcoming performance at New York’s Annex, Winters and DePizzo sat down with Jambands.com to discuss their mutual love of the Allman Brothers, the importance of the Wetlands and playing the club circuit before they were able to legally drink.
