Rebel Fire

Rebel Fire
Rebel Fire, out of Ithaca, NY, has struck the masses with their all enduring roots reggae sound vibrations. Using Music to change the world and promote global awareness, inner peace and higher consciousness, Rebel Fire never ceases to take each song to a higher level. The band is currently gearing up to hit the studios again this February for a “new debut” release. With local legend Kevin Kinsella in the production seat, the album, due out this spring is sure to be a success. The album will include a number of new songs as well as a few of the old favorites, including four tracks recorded at Full Grown records in Albuquerque New Mexico.

Rebel Fire is inspired and guided by the sublime and ambient voice of vocalist and keyboard player Christina Barry. To say that Christina is a phenomenal songwriter does not truly give poetic justice to the integrity of the music. Her arrangements, which are all original, feature archetypal roots rhythms, and genuinely, soulful lyrics. Sweet and often satirical, her finely crafted songs never fail to move her listeners in many positive ways. Christina has been honored and blessed to share the stage with many of her favorite musicians including, Midnite, Mystic Vision and One Foundation. Sharing the stage and energy of creating the innovative Rebel Fire sound, are longtime drummer Josh Bryant, Adam Tagliamonte on Bass, Larissa Pollica on flute and incredible guitarist Mark Brutvan. Rebel Fire was the new artist featured at the North Eastern Reggae Festival in 2009, and plans to appear there again in April, followed by a tour on the summer festival circuit to promote the album.

Canibus

Canibus
Long considered being one of the best lyrical freestyle rappers ever, Canibus has proven he has few equals when it comes to spitting off the dome and even more so in making solid independent albums. As a master of the indie game, Canibus prepares to release his new album "Melatonin Magik" Feb 9th on War Lab Records.

In a modern telling of the story David vs. Goliath, Canibus has once again proven that he is the modern day David by stepping to some of the greatest to have ever blessed the mic. Known best for his epic battle with LL Cool J, Bus' has moved on to bigger and better prey this time, with the calculated Eminem diss track "Air Strike (Pop Killer)" Featuring D12 and VA based rapper DZK.

Being consistent with his theme of reclaiming Hip Hop for what its true calling is, Bus' includes "Hip-Hop Black Ops" that likens the corporate evil empire forces as those that are hurting the culture the most. Considering it an act of war, Bus' considers "Melatonin Magik" as his pre-emptive strike.

After starting his career with Fugee member Wyclef Jean, Canibus engaged in a long-lived beef with LL Cool J that propelled his stature to a God of the Hardcore Underground.

From his first album "Can-I-Bus", Canibus followed up releasing "2000 B.C." and "C True Hollywood Stories", both of which landed in the Billboard Top 200. Having eventually released 8 full-length albums with aggregate sales close to 1,000,000 units, Canibus established a loyal fan base of followers who anticipate each new release as their glimpse into what is really going on in the trenches of the fight for Hip Hop Culture.

U-Melt

U-Melt
A wise fan knows to expect the unexpected at a U-Melt show. From the moment the New York City based quartet hits the stage, they grab the crowd with undeniably funky and infectious grooves that hit new levels when Rob Salzer’s mind-bending guitar work and Zac Lasher’s hypnotic, entrancing keyboards are given room to roam. Their improvisational work is made possible by Adam Bendy’s innovative bass work and George Miller’s brilliant drumming, which opens doors for Lasher and Salzer to treat the audience to heavy doses of their creative, free-flowing interplay.

Consider the Source
Self-described as “Sci-fi Middle Eastern funk that also rocks,” the New York City-based instrumental trio Consider the Source — Gabriel Marin (double-neck electric fretless guitar and chaturangui), John Ferrara (bass) and Justin Ahiyon (drums and percussion)—delivers effect-soaked riffing, spaced-out shredding and sitar-like twanging with funky bass and anchoring drums. From its beginnings as what Ahiyon calls “a totally improvising group,” the band has drawn upon influences from progressive rock and jazz fusion artists like The Mahavishnu Orchestra and The Bad Plus. Travel abroad has also impacted the group’s development as Marin explains that, “In a different culture, you can understand why music sounds a certain way or why cats play a certain way, so it gets more in your blood.” The threesome recorded its second full-length, Are You Watching Closely? earlier this year which, according to Ahiyon, moves in “a new direction incorporating a lot more rhythmic stuff, a lot more melodic stuff. It’s a little bit more extreme.” - Relix

Ari Hest

Ari Hest
Many singer-songwriters toil for months on their Macs, trying to make a demo that sounds polished enough to score them a record deal with a major label. But Ari Hest has done the exact opposite, as he continues to defy the conventional route of a musician.

Already signed to a major, he opted out of his label deal so that he could have more control over his art. He then embarked on his ambitious ‘52’ project, during which he spent all of last year immersed in an unprecedented effort – to write, record, produce and release one new song per week, for 52 weeks in a row. Now, he will self-release his new studio CD, ‘Twelve Mondays,’ on March 10th. The album features reworked versions of 12 fan-selected songs, culled from the past year’s extraordinary output.

It’s a renegade path that reveals the ‘New Music Industry’ at its best, and allows Hest’s impressive work to find the audience he wants it to find. ‘Twelve Mondays’ showcases the diversity of Hest’s songwriting – from the haunting, minimasterpiece “Broken Voices” to the USA TODAY ‘Listen Up Music Pick’ “The Weight,” which was praised as a “poignant, acoustic reverie…” — From the wistful travelogue “Ride The Brake” to the radio-friendly “Dead End Driving,” it’s a remarkable mix that’s distinguished by the intelligence, nuance and range of Hest’s material. Add to that the fact that these songs were written amid the week-to-week gauntlet of ‘52’, and it’s all the more impressive.

Joe Driscoll

Joe Driscoll
Creating waves on both sides of the Atlantic are the transcendental sounds of modern day one man band, Joe Driscoll. His revolutionary take on music is without boundaries. Effortlessly fusing hip-hop, reggae, soul, folk and rock to create a completely original and unique sound; an innovator not only for the genre defying music he creates, but for the groundbreaking way in which he performs it. A true renaissance man, Driscoll is a lone figure on stage and in the studio, yet is able to create the complete soundscape of a full band utilizing heavy vocal percussion, an array of instruments, a loop pedal, and a lot of imagination.

Hailing from upstate New York, Driscoll was spotted and signed by London based label Buttercuts Records while touring the U.K. The resulting album ‘Origin Myths’ is the perfect synthesis, combining the raw live magic that has made him an international underground legend, with a more polished presentation created with thoughtful craftsmanship in the studio. Though the album is a more sculpted sound, thanks to producer Pierre Duplan, every audible creation is all Joe. The drums are beat box (oral percussion) with layers of guitar, bass, verse, and rhyme created by the man himself.

Sondre Lerche

Sondre Lerche
The incredible Norwegian songwriter, cred-kid extraordinaire, and the voice you know from Dan in Real Life comes to Castaways in Ithaca on Saturday, February 27th. We are extremely excited for this show as this astounding talent and incredible vocalist and tunesmith graces our fair city for his first time. This show will feature Sondre solo in the intimate Castaways setting.

On their latest album, Phantom Punch, Sondre Lerche & The Faces Down deliver music brimming over with unrestrained youthful energy. 11 powerful tracks, several recorded live in only one take, don’t forsake Lerche’s well renowned melodic gifts, but its concise solos and vigorous ensemble playing show us a band at the top of their game. “These songs are cut to the bone, not a second longer than they have to be,” Lerche explains. “And I didn’t want to be subtle this time around, I wanted every song to jump out of the speakers – punchy, concise pop songs, played with restless spirit.”

PO' GIRL

PO' GIRL
The interplay between Allison Russell, Awna Teixeira, Benny Sidelinger, and Mikey "Lightning" August is truly something to behold. They are distinct voices with incredible harmonies; multiple instrumentalists who bring the perfect sound to each song and songwriters who pen poetic tunes you’ll find yourself humming. Po’Girl showcases a wide array of instruments-from gutbucket bass, accordion, clarinet, banjo, dobro, guitar, to electric bass, glockenspiel, piano, harmonica, bicycle bells, drums-- and they all frequently trade off instruments with each song. Their fluid and joyous musicality is one of the group's most endearing and irresistible features.

Impossible to put this band in a tidy little box—they’re equally at home in Douala, Cameroon playing the Massao World Music Festival, as they are at the International Jazz Festival in Montreal, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Woodford Music Festival in Australia or just playing for fun for the people in Vondel Park, Amsterdam.

Suffice to say Po'Girl makes 21st Century roots music, urban roots – never derivative, not faithfully aping a beloved tradition. Russell, Teixeira, Sidelinger, and August don't re-hash the old forms, they reshape and reinvigorate them for new ears. Like genuine gypsies, they wander and play - out on the international road bringing their unique brand of pan North Americana to a widespread audience 250 to 300 days of the year… Always restless, more often than not bone-tired, they write their flashes of sadness, their loss, their good love, their faint dreams of home into songs that matter deeply to them. Like any good art, they are little acts of self-rescue. So you should listen. You aren't much different from them, and who couldn't use a little rescuing these days?

That 1 Guy

That 1 Guy
That 1 Guy one-man band and master of a spectacular musical instrument: The Magic Pipe

“That 1 Guy’s tunes are ‘eargasms’ lingering sublimely in your subconscious long after the show ends. All we as an audience could do was sit rapt, mouths gaping, and witness this amazing spectacle.”
— Sylvia W. Chan, SF Bay Guardian

“Necessity is the mother of invention. But in the case of Mike Silverman’s slamming, futuristic funk act, That 1 Guy, the normalrules of biology just don’t apply.”
— Andrew Gilbert, Billboard/Express

“Silverman’s layering is unbelievably sophisticated, his groovesimmensely phat, and his instrument astoundingly original.”
— Jude Gold, Guitar Player/Online Edition

That 1 Guy —real name Mike Silverman— amazes audiences with performances that are equal parts innovative sonic spectacle and entertaining visual showcase. The classically-trained-jazz-bassist-turned-musical-mad-scientist treks across the country with his Magic Pipe, a homemade instrument concocted out of steel plumbing tube that allows Silverman to deliver a mind-bending amalgamation of percussive rhythm and sound. The “Mustaches & Laser Beams Tour” promises to be That 1 Guy’s most inventive. “I’m upping the ante with the stage show,”says Silverman. “There are going to be new visual tricks. I want them to be surprises, and I can’t wait to spring them on people.

With an audience that ranges from psychedelic warriors to families and folks of all ages, he has played the Magic Pipe in locales as exotic as Noumea, Istanbul, Scotland and Australia, where That 1 Guy is celebrated as a modern folk hero. At the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he was presented with the Tapwater Award for Best Musical Act. While That 1 Guy’s fan base continues to grow, he has also been embraced by his musical peers and predecessors. In 2008 Silverman spent time on the road with guitarist Buckethead, with whom he collaborated to form Frankenstein Brothers and release the album Bolt on Neck. Additionally he performed on Tom Waits’ 2006 album Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, and his music has been featured on the Showtime hit “Weeds.”

That 1 Guy’s most recent studio release, The Moon is Disgusting, is a work of evolution, from the primitiveness of the Mississippi Delta in the title track to the farthest reaches of outer space in the closing aural soundscape, “Rainbow.” “The album was originally conceived as the soundtrack to an animated film I wanted to make,” he explains. “I love music that takes you on a trip, a journey. A lot of these songs and ideas have been bottled up inside me for years, and came pouring out. We kept the live feel in the studio, and nothing was labored. [Engineer Karl Derfler] captured the magic.” Silverman continues to consistently deliver the unexpected with the most unique live show on the touring circuit today. That 1 Guy’s show must be seen to be believed.

The Vancouver, Canada– based band combines aspects of Irish traditional, acoustic pop, roots Americana, even Australian and Mexican influences, to create their own unique brand of “West Coast Celtic.” Armed with a pawnshop’s worth of musical instruments, The Town Pants play songs that appeal to young and old alike. The music of The Town Pants remains in the heart and head long after the music stops. The Keogh brothers, Dave and Duane, lead the band in vocals and instrumentation with banjo and acoustic guitar, teamed with Aaron Chapman on tin whistle, harmonica and vocals. Together with some fiery fiddle and an outstanding rhythm section they generate a rare blend of passion, energy, animation and spirit. The Town Pants are unsurpassed with their fast-paced West Coast Celtic style. Feverish and stampeding, The Town Pants’ lively renditions of traditional and contemporary Celtic-influenced tunes, combined with the group’s original compositions, create a distinctive sound that has attracted fans from around the world. At home, Vancouver fans selected The Town Pants as one of their favourite National Celtic/Traditional Acts in Vancouver’s Georgia Straight entertainment weekly annual “Best of Vancouver” readers’ poll, where they were shortlisted with such groups as Great Big Sea and Natalie MacMaster.

The Buddhi

The Buddhi
The Buddhi is a collection of travelers, musicians, poets, artists, and above all, friends, who have come together with a sole purpose to create. Come Listen.

The Buddhi is constantly evolving. Changing their repertoire, gear and ideas constantly, this gang of six has been troublesome to those who dare to confine them to a specific genre or predict there next move. Dancing around the boundaries of funk and reggae, The Buddhi has been known to keep audiences alive by conjuring an appetite for groove and tone, attacking the senses with a wall of sound. At the groups core we find a rhythm section just as dirty and raw as it is tight and sweet, leaving you always wanting more. Horns, ranging from 2-4 pieces, always seem to be leaving people with a melody unforgettable. The tunes orbit around discourses of humanity, stories and messages that blur the lines of reality and the surreal, leaving it up to you to find your own meanings in the Buddhi's songs. The Buddhi dares to different, looking steadfast into the future, yet at the same time respecting the sounds and messages of many that have come before. The Buddhi has been know to tear paint off walls, ripping up the funk to pulsating reggae influenced groove, leaving no danceable beats behind. The Buddhi is sure to make any show a special occasion, bringing a wall of sound with them everywhere they play.

Henry Rollins

Henry Rollins
The Frequent Flier Tour
More than 25 years ago, Henry Rollins made a name for himself as the frenzied, tattooed front man for the hardcore punk band Black Flag. While many of his contemporaries have long since disappeared from the stage, Rollins is still performing. The free-associating wordsmith still dabbles in music but also gives spoken-word performances and has toured with the United Service Organizations (USO), providing comic relief to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

During his career, Rollins has averaged more than 100 performances a year and shows no signs of slowing down. He has tackled Lollapalooza and Woodstock, appeared on late night television with Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno, and snagged the occasional acting gig alongside such A-list celebrities as Will Smith and Al Pacino. Rollins even won a Grammy, for the audio book Get in the Van , an account of his road-tripping band days. In 2004, Rollins moved from performing onstage to behind the camera as host of his own television show on the Independent Film Channel. At first, the show focused on movies, but by 2006, he had extended the format to also include critiques of music, politics, and pop culture amidst a steady stream of celebrity guests and musicians. more about the amazing career of Henry Rollins

Shearwater

Shearwater
Shearwater continue to explore the beauty, menace, and fragility of the natural world – and that increasingly rare species, the indivisible album – on The Golden Archipelago, the band’s most absorbing and accomplished work to date. The new record is the third panel of a triptych that includes 2006’s enigmatic Palo Santo and 2008’s acclaimed Rook, albums linked by themes of environmental and personal decay and humans’ impact on nature. In The Golden Archipelago, Shearwater turn to a portrait of life on islands – a world of alternating lushness and austerity, numinous silences and sudden cataclysms, and the strange flowerings of plant, animal, and human life that only arise in isolation. These are intimate subjects for songwriter Jonathan Meiburg. As a researcher, he’s camped on islands at the edges of the world, including the Falklands, Tierra del Fuego, the Galapagos, Madagascar, Nunavut, and New Zealand’s Chatham Islands, and once spent a few surreal months in a remote Aboriginal settlement in northern Australia. Adding his grandfather’s WWII experiences as a radio operator in the South Pacific to these travels gave Meiburg plenty of fodder for the songs of The Golden Archipelago, in which he weaves these times and places together with common feelings of wonder, grief, and defiance.

The Apples in stereo

The Apples in stereo
The shiny pop centerpiece of the famed Elephant 6 collective, The Apples in stereo was born of Robert Schneider’s infatuation with recording and his near-pathological compulsion to write the perfect pop song. Citing Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys as their root text a decade before it was en vogue, Schneider and former and future band members Hilarie Sidney, Jim McIntyre, Chris Parfitt, John Hill, Eric Allen, Chris McDuffie, Bill Doss, John Ferguson, John Dufilho, and others used their basement-D.I.Y. beginnings as a launching pad into a kaleidoscopic galaxy of sound. Constantly mutating from debut album Fun Trick Noisemaker through recent opus New Magnetic Wonder, that galaxy has expanded from 4-track recordings made in Schneider’s bedroom to 100-track sonic experiments complete with new musical scales.

Deer Tick

Deer Tick
DSP is proud to welcome back Deer Tick to Ithaca on May 9 at Castaways. After a stunning performance at The Positive Jam, Deer Tick will return continuing support for their second full-length Born on Flag Day. Gathering critical acclaim for their round-robin style of performance featuring spur of the moment covers, Deer Tick have lived on the road from the beginning. Working inexhaustibly for eleven months of 2009, they aren’t stopping for the new decade. Tickets will go on sale on Feb 12th for $12adv.

Deer Tick began in December 2004 as a two-man drum and guitar band as a new vehicle for songwriter, and Providence, Rhode Island native, John Joseph McCauley III. After hearing a Hank Williams song on the radio, McCauley purchased as much Hank Sr. as he could at a record store, got his underage hands on a big bottle of brandy, and locked himself up in his cold and drafty bedroom listening to ol’ Hank until the bottle was dry. It was a departure from the dissonant rock n roll scene that McCauley had been familiar with growing up in Providence. Alongside him was his best friend, Paul Thomas Marandola, on the drums. The two made some tapes, played a couple small shows, and tried to find a bass player.

Southern Culture on the Skids

Southern Culture on the Skids
"Countrypolitan transcends music. It's a lifestyle, not a category of music," says Southern Culture on the Skids front man, Rick Miller. "It's where rural and urban sensibilities meet. I mean, it's when you see trucker hats being sold in Beverly Hills boutiques or notice folks eating pork in Mebane, where I live, drinking a glass of merlot. Or best yet, when you see a motor sport invented by backwoods moonshine runners and bootleggers broadcast on Sunday afternoon into potentially every living room in America, there ain't no doubt it's a countrypolitan world and SCOTS' new album, Countrypolitan Favorites, is the soundtrack for it."

Long the bards of downward mobility, Southern Culture on the Skids have always embodied countrypolitan. Recently described by Dwight Yoakam (in Filter) as "really on the outside, like Dick Dale meets Hank Thompson," SCOTS have mixed high and low culture for decades, endlessly touring, serving up moonshine martinis and poultry picking for fans everywhere. Now, with their new fifteen song covers collection, Countrypolitan Favorites, they've given the Go-Go country treatment to some of their favorite songs, creating a tasty buffet of tunes from Don Gibson to T-Rex.

"It's a party record," Miller says. As if anything Southern Culture on the Skids might put on tape wouldn't be a party record.

Since 1983, when they formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, SCOTS have played their unique hybrid of Americana, surf, R&B, rockabilly, and swamp pop (the band describes their sound as "toe sucking geek rock - kinda weird, but it feels good when you're doing it"), all the while driving fans into ecstatic, sweat drenched paroxysms of joy. Assisted by his cohorts in white trash renaissance - drummer Dave Hartman and bassist/singer/heartbreaker Mary Huff - Miller and crew have been prolific and ubiquitous for over twenty years. From their 1985 debut Voodoo Beach Party, to the international smash, 1998's Dirt Track Date (featuring the hit single "Camel Walk"), and up to their last studio album, 2004's barnstormer Mojo Box, Southern Culture on the Skids have continued to throw what Rolling Stone dubbed "a hell raising rock and roll party." Their 2005 live outing, Doublewide and Live!, captured all of this on tape, dirty and rough and wild.

"The live album was so raunchy," Miller said, "the production on this one we wanted to be slick."

Recorded at Miller's own studio (The Kudzu Ranch), Countrypolitan Favorites might be slick in spots, but there's no mistaking that this is the same Southern Culture on the Skids who wrote "Eight Piece Box."

"Countrypolitan was an outgrowth of the Nashville sound of the 60's. It was an attempt to go more mainstream and put dents in the pop charts and create more sophisticated tunes - for country jetsetters," Miller says. "It was a deliberate blend of country and pop. I always think it's cool to blur the lines between genres," Miller adds, "But we took the countrypolitan concept a bit further [on Countrypolitan Favorites], adding and subtracting, updating - getting respectfully irreverent, you know, close to the cuff but all mixed up."

And mix it up they did, giving traditional country songs the rock treatment, and vice versa. T-Rex's "Life's a Gas" appears here with country harmonies atop heavy synthesizer; "O Lonesome Me" has an upbeat twist, again with the harmony vocals; "Tobacco Road" sounds like CCR, while CCR's "Tombstone Shadow" gets stacked with three part bluegrass harmonies, and "No Longer a Sweetheart of Mine," originally a bluegrass tune by Reno and Smiley, gets rocked up with surf guitar and honky tonk piano and more harmony vocals. "Funnel of Love" (made famous by Wanda Jackson) is a standout track, featuring Mary Huff's sultry lead vocal, and her duet with Rick on the swingers-on-the-rocks classic, "Let's Invite Them Over" (an Onie Wheeler original), explores the relationship of a couple who don't love each other, but do love their best friends.

"Let's Invite Them Over" is the most thematically correct song on the album, as far as countrypolitan goes," Dr. Miller says. "It's suburban roulette!"

When asked why the "countrypolitan" social phenomenon works so well when put into a musical context, Miller expounded, "It's an overlap of high and low culture. Homogenization, though probably not a good thing, makes for some interesting observations." Sounds like a true academic. But then Dr. Miller added, "But we're not sociologists or anything. I mean, we just want to party."

And so, let us party, with Southern Culture on the Skids' Countrypolitan Favorites.

The Bottle Rockets

The Bottle Rockets
In a country where interstates don’t take you to new places, but to the same places, where everywhere you go you’ve already been or you’ve just left, The Bottle Rockets’ new album absolutely nails a sound and a vibe with a palpable sense of place. Lean Forward is suffused with the determination and resilience of their distinctly midwestern roots; theirs is a celebration of pragmatism and tempered optimism, not the delusions and exhortations of glassy eyed zealots—they aren’t going to fall for that. Oh, it’s a flat out, smoking rock record, too.

Lean Forward continues the Rockets’ creative resurgence ignited by 2006’s Zoysia. Reunited with producer Eric “Roscoe” Ambel (who ran the knobs on the Bottle Rockets’ seminal albums The Brooklyn Side and 24 Hours A Day), the Bottle Rockets do what no other band does better — look into the hearts and minds and faces of the dying small towns in America and crafts populist anthems with the sympathetic eye of Woody Guthrie and sonic stomp of Crazy Horse. They are songs that demand the windows be rolled down and the volume turned up. And with the hooks, you’ll wonder how they make such problems sound so good …
