Malang Jobateh and Badema

Malang Jobateh and Badema
with very special guest
Madou Sidiki Diabate

BADEMA BAND has taken shape around the release of the CD "BADEMA (One Human Family)", a collaboration between Gambian born Malang Jobateh and local multi-instrumentalist/producer Nate Silas Richardson (Sim Redmond Band, Black Castle, JBB "alum")

The recording began in February 2006, when Jobateh visited Ithaca, upon the invitation of Richardson, who had been studying the music of West Africa for ten years independently, and for one year privately with Mamadou Diabate (who has since become one of the world's most celebrated Kora players) and ngoni/guitar master Moussa Cissoko. After a week's worth of sessions and gigs Malang decided to skip his return flight. Released in the fall of 2007, the music is a fusion of Malang's unmistakable Senegambian style and Nate's wide range of influences, which have never before been rendered together in such a way.

The all-star lineup for BADEMA BAND is Malang on 21-string Kora and Vocals, Nate on Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Jali Jobateh on Percussion, Matt Sacuccimorano (Black Castle, Jennie Lowe, Hubcap, Mofos, et al) on Drumkit, and Brian Dozoretz (Black Castle, Jennie Lowe, Five2 et al) on Upright and Electric Bass. Papis Cissoko has been known to make the occasional trip from his current home in Las Vegas to play Keys for special engagements. The energy is always incredible and the music, at first exotic, quickly becomes infectious, and there is rarely anyone left off the dance floor after the first number... Come join us as we celebrate life as ONE HUMAN FAMILY. Opening the show on 7/3 will be the INCOMPARABLE Madou Sidiki Diabate, younger brother of the world's most famous korist Toumani Diabate - DON'T MISS THIS SHOW! Receive $3 off the cover charge with your ticket stub from the previous night's concert (an evening with Madou Sidiki at the Foundation of Light).

Lost Sailors

Lost Sailors
Lost Sailors has been playing for over 12 years, has performed over 400 shows, and is widely considered to be the premier interpretive Grateful Dead tribute band in Upstate N.Y. We've built a solid reputation for high-energy, carefully-crafted, and unpredictable performances, as well as the most consistently enjoyable club sound production around.

Their shows follow the Grateful Dead's traditional two-long-sets format, with a wide-ranging mix of rock, folk, blues, and country-pickin', mainly electric with some acoustic treatments. Improvisational jams are punctuated by sweet ballads and classic show stoppers. Music people of all ages and tastes love to listen and dance to.

Rubblebucket Orchestra

Rubblebucket Orchestra
... a cutting edge ten-piece afrobeat/rock band led by trumpeter Alex Toth and fronted by alluring vocalist Kalmia Traver. Comparisons have been drawn to Portishead, Fela Kuti, Bjork and James Brown, but Rubblebucket's genre-bending, neo-psychedelic soul experience is beyond classification. In addition to winning Relix Magazine's Jam-Off competition in July 2008, Rubblebucket was recently named "Best New Band of 2008," by Seven Days Vermont.

One of the most exciting groups to come out of Boston in recent memory...a genre-mashing maelstrom of hot-blooded West African funk rhythms and scorching soul melodies unlike anything that’s come before it. - Dan Bolles, Seven Days.

Rubblebucket Orchestra is not your Mamma’s foot-tapping funk band. These guys are a flat-out “move everything” kind of groove. - Ryan’s Smashing Life

Their youthful exuberance is matched with skill, and they remind you, or inform you, that it’s all right to let your guard down and leave your snarky baggage at the door. Listening to Rubblebucket is a moment in time when you feel like everything is going to work out. You feel that spirit. - Mike McKinley, State of Mind

Adonai and I

Adonai and I
Adonai and I is a ten-piece roots reggae band that draws its inspiration from traditional Hebrew melodies and features an all-star cast of some of the best reggae and dub players in the Northeastern United States. Instrumentation includes drums, bass, keys, 2 guitars, 3-piece horn section, vocals, and percussion.

The brainchild of David Solid Gould, Adonai and I was formed while David was on the road playing bass with John Brown’s Body. David started combining the Hebrew melodies he heard as a child with the reggae music that has come to resonate in his soul. The result is a very eclectic sound combining the often haunting minor melodies with a traditional approach to the roots reggae and rockers sounds heard in Jamaican dance halls in the mid-late 1970s. David skillfully and very naturally crafts in elements of funk, soul, jazz and nyabinghi music.

The Maybelles
“Of all the music the Be Good Tanya's gave me, my favorite is The Maybelles. They sound like they might be the grand daughters of country greats from the 1930's, The Wild Wood Flowers”
Charlie Gillett - BBC London

We just love The Maybelles...memorable songs, great spirit, lovely and lilting harmonies---plus they're just plain fun. Its great to hear them re-inventing a whole new kind of old-time music.
Marian Leighton Levy, Ken Irwin - Founders - Rounder Records (2009)

I love bands that are willing to explore new territory. I love the instrumental combination, the old-time real country feel, the close harmonies and the sprightly fiddle playing. I think you all are onto something big. Thanks so much for sending me a copy of Leavin' Town.
Dave Higgs - Nashville Public Radio - Bluegrass Breakdown

Chuck Eddy, Senior Editor - Village Voice Top Ten Folk Albums

ZipWire
ZipWire is an unlikely, intriguing collaboration between Black Eyed Susies’ members Leah Houghtaling and Amelia Sauter, and Jules Piper of The Witching. The girls have dubbed their unique melding of sounds “Ithacountry,” characterized by the intermingling of rock, Americana, folk and country that one might come to expect in Ithaca. Jules’ growling vocals, Amelia’s country harmonies and Leah’s driving banjo provide the platform for a point-and-shoot high energy performance laced with three-part harmonies.

Liz Berlin
of Rusted Root

Liz Berlin
of Rusted Root

As a classical composition evokes emotion and controls its audiences, so does Liz Berlin command the stage. Recognized as an illustrious voice within Island Def Jam's multi-platinum selling group, Rusted Root, Liz's creativity has grown to be a viable force in any project she applies herself to.

Over their twelve-year history, Liz and Rusted Root have toured the Country with Santana, the Allman Brothers, Joan Osbourne, Sting, Dave Matthews Band, Sheryl Crow, Page and Plant, Jewel, and The Grateful Dead among many others.

As a solo artist, Liz Berlin's performances are highly anticipated She has performed many shows in the last 10 years, including the H.O.R.D.E. Festival in 1996, the 1997 Lilith Fair, and The Great Blue Heron Festival 2000 in Jamestown, NY. Liz embraces her creativity through personal interaction, intimate songwriting, and her emotionally charged voice. Raised on classical voice training as a child, she has sung with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Opera. This was the beginning of the long and twisted path through the worlds of folk, pop, ethnic, rock, and Rusted Root, through which she has created her own unique artistic style.

At her shows, Liz delivers a truly hypnotic live performance. Her collection of original songs --sometimes tranquil, sometimes funky, sometimes raging-- are written on a very personal level, and her life experiences unfold like chapters in a book. She explores her imagination thoroughly, projecting the fine lines and shadowy corners of her heart and mind with a sensitive intelligence. Audiences become utterly enchanted by her many voices, spiraling at times from tender and chillingly true, into an elegant wailing decree.

with special guest

Heather Moran
Heather Moran first started singing as a teenager in Rochester, NY. She went on to study Jazz Performance at SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. For the last 4 years, she has been living, working, and making music in New York City. Red Stick Ramblers

Red Stick Ramblers
"We live pretty fast and hard," confesses Red Stick Ramblers fiddler and vocalist Linzay Young. "We live life to its fullest. Then we pour that into our songwriting and our music, and take it with us wherever we go."

Hard driving, witty, eclectic, and honest, the music of the Red Stick Ramblers is inseparable from their way of life and the rich Louisiana culture that first inspired them.

Fresh on the heels of the release of their latest album, My Suitcase is Always Packed, Louisiana's pride The RED STICK RAMBLERS return to Castaways. It's been over three years since they've graced our Ithaca club circuit but they've toured relentlessly since, most recently in Australia. The band's dual fiddle stomp and swingin' melodies are sure to get you moving through the hot August night.

Ra Ra Riot

Ra Ra Riot
Fresh off a tour with Death Cab for Cutie, local indie band Ra Ra Riot will return triumphantly to Ithaca on September 9th at Castaways to kick off DSP’s fall club calendar. The band hails from nearby Syracuse, NY and have garnered a ton of praise for their Barsuk debut The Rhumb Line.

It’s not often you stumble across a danceable indie rock band with a cello and violin. Even if you do, chances are the music won’t be half as good as Ra Ra Riot.

Formed in 2006 as an energetic chamber pop sextet, Ra Ra Riot quickly caught the attention of national media and secured recognition with a self titled EP.

With their latest release, Ra Ra Riot join label mates Death Cab For Cutie and Rilo Kiley on Barsuk Records. “The Rhumb Line,” released in August 2008, is a mature debut full length and sophisticated effort from this talented group, bringing to life an intense realism in a characteristically positive light. Fresh off a European tour with Los Campesinos! and Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot is getting hotter by the minute and promises only greater things to come.

Their songs range from upbeat, catchy, Converse-tapping tunes to thoughtful, haunting melodies. The music is well-orchestrated and layered with lingering melodies weaving warm earmuffs you’ll never want to remove.

But as their music might tell you, it hasn’t been all major keys for this Syracuse sextet. The group has endured a couple of heartbreaks, including the devastating loss of founding member and creative force, drummer John Ryan Pike in 2007, and the theft of years worth of creativity in the form of notebooks, journals, computers and demos last year in Montreal.

But on they went, using music as a healing tool. Their tenacity has paid off in a big way. Their energetic live performance, which earned them a reputation and buzz at last year’s SXSW festival, only seals the deal.

In short, it’s tough not to like this band. I’ve never listened to “a frothing cauldron of gruel,” but according to the band’s Myspace page, that’s exactly what they sound like. Somebody get me a cauldron. ---NICHOLAS GRIZZLE
