Consider the Source Three Musicians converging on an epic plateau of sound and reflex. Three conscious minds communicating on sub-conscious levels. New York City's CONSIDER THE SOURCE is the fourth voice, produced only when the trio's three musicians combine forces to fearlessly share their inner most distinct musical styles with each other.
Toting the loaded description Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Funk, their sound is a melting pot of Middle Eastern scales, psychedelic jams, and a hard rocking rhythm section. Featuring Gabriel Marin on Fret-Less Double Neck Guitar, John Ferrara on Bass, and Justin Ahiyon on Drums/Percussion, the three musicians cite their influences as including The Bad Plus, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson and Tool—but a major source of their musical power can be attributed to a trip the band took to India, where they studied the complex tala (rhythm) of North India, and the micro-tonal scale structure and melodic ornamentations of South India. Guitarist Gabriel Marin, recently highlighted in GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE says, "Our music combines influences from Turkish, Bulgarian, North and South Indian styles with jazz and fusion, and then we filter it through our own heavy rock and psychedelic sounds and approaches."

The Xskavators might be a new addition to Ithaca, but their sound is 100% old-school ska, seasoned with a dash of the Caribbean and a pinch of Latin America, for a tasty treat that’s guaranteed to get you on your feet and dancing. Driving bass and percussion (Harry Aceto, Cesar Enciso, and Don “Dr Two Brains” Anderson) provide a solid foundation for a down and dirty horn section (Bob McMahon and Don Slatoff), and Dan Barker’s rock-steady guitar and the amazing keyboard sound of Alejandro Bernard-Papachryssanthou complete the band’s lineup. Most of the band members are well known in Ithaca’s local music scene, and once again, they deliver as promised, this time with a repertoire ranging from originals to old standards, but any and every tune is fair game – when the Xskavators get their hands on it, you won’t be able to resist! Cheating Intention The Cheating Intention is soul-funk music, taking the honesty and heart from soul music, and the body moving groove from funk run through a Twitter-age filter.
The Cheating Intention is from Ithaca, NY built on the backs of the brothers Staniulis [Aaron (Guitar and Vocals) and Jason (Drums and Vocals)] with August Schneeberg (Bass) filling out the bottom and Jeremy Bayes (Keys) added to the fray. The Cheating Intention simmers together the new and the old schools of Funk, Soul, and R&B to get their own brand of Soul-funk music.
The Cheating Intention is smooth with an edge, sporting tight grooves to all those who want to move, recently being dubbed as "bringing back blue-eyed soul".
This is music for the people, by the people. Songs about both sides of the love game; when you win and when you loose. Music to make you feel good, and most of all music to make you move. It's not looking to be profound or change your philosophy. It might make you want to get up and start something, or make you want to light a candle and lock the door. Ben Weiss Presents: Emancipator with Little People n one of BWP's most exciting events to date, Emancipator (Doug Appling) will be coming thru Ithaca to heat up Castaways with his signature warm downtempo trip-hop beats. And for the students, we worked hard with his management to route him thru right at the start of the Winter semester, on a Friday night no less, to help you ease back into classes properly.
Emancipator will be supported by UK producer Little People on the date for a well rounded, jam packed night of incredible music.

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad For over five years, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad's live show has defined the band. Touring relentlessly, the Rochester, NY-based group is sustained by its passion to reinterpret, explore, and expand its music night after night in cities throughout the country.
Now, 767 concerts since the 2006 release of their debut album "Slow Down," GPGDS is set to release a new album, "Country," on January 31, 2012, on the California-based label Controlled Substance Sound Labs. With this release, the quintet has charted new territory and put together a lyrically-driven roots Americana album.
Combining acoustic instrumentation including slide guitar, banjo, harmonica, upright piano, percussion, and bass, the album showcases songs as they were first created: on the road, riding in the van, and jamming backstage. The production of "Country" taps into that spontaneous rhythm, allowing the music to wash over listeners like a conversation between old friends. James Searl, Dylan Savage, and Dan Keller trade off lead vocal duties, with back up vocals provided by drummer Chris O'Brian, and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Lipp.
"Country" is an immensely personal album that balances the themes of love separated by distance, while also inspiring reflection on the tumultuous times that we live in. On songs such as "Country" and "Kids In The Square," James Searl explores elements of the social unrest and Occupy movements that have defined 2011. These emotions are evident when he sings "Time to get living is now / YouTube the moment try to teach us how / Run to the square with the people you know and you gotta get moving cause the movements been slow" (Kids In The Square).
"Country" was recorded at Scanhope Sound, the Colorado studio owned by the band's longtime sound engineer Joel Scanlon. Searl says the album was born unexpectedly last summer when "we walked into Joel's studio and he just pressed record. This is what got laid down. It was unplanned, fun, and real." The album kept moving forward when Atlanta-based producer Billy Hume (Nas, STS9, Ludacris, Josh Ritter) mixed the tracks shortly after meeting the band at The Festy, near Charlottesville, VA this past October.
Later this spring, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad will release a full electric album, "In These Times." The psychedelic roots sound will be more familiar to fans who have gotten to know the band through their concerts and live recordings. Controlled Substance Sound Labs will release "Country" on January 31, 2012, and "In These Times" on March 27, 2012.

Please meet us at Castaways, Sunday afternoon, February 11, for a benefit concert in honor of Caroline Bond,--or “Caza,” as she’s known to her countless friends in the local community, as a member of Lisa and the Tomcats, at the Ithaca Ballet and in the Trumansburg and Ithaca City School Districts.
Hosted by DJ Nicky Wood, the party will feature local acts like “Lisa and the Tomcats,” “Robin Burnett and the A Band,” and teen heroes “Starts on Friday,” along with other special guests.

Rustic Overtones Rustic Overtones formed in Portland, ME, hometown to each of them. Members of this seven-piece outfit are guitarist and lead vocalist Dave Gutter, drummer Tony McNaboe, trombonist Dave Noyes, baritone saxophonist Jason Ward, bassist Jon Roods, alto saxophonist Ryan Zoidis, and Spencer Albee on keyboards and piano. Roods and Gutter began performing together first, in a family basement. They later added the rest of the group, all friends from high school, and became what is Rustic Overtones. Local gigs earned them a fan base that expanded as the band began to travel, appearing at close to 200 shows some years.

Zack Deputy On his upcoming release Another Day (Eusonia Records, 2011), Zach Deputy demonstrates his extraordinary ability to perform and record in multiple contexts and conveys the sensibilities of a mature singer/songwriter. Another Day offers another look at Zach Deputy and seeks to help him cross over into other audiences. Rich with ballads and mid-tempo songs, the music on this recording is best described as soulful rhythm and blues, with flavors of Al Green, Taj Mahal and Stevie Wonder emerging in the swells, changes and modulations of the music, in the voice and even in the lyrical content. The record will appeal to fans of contemporary artists like Jack Johnson and Amos Lee, but the origins of the style and feel remain classic. Another Day is an appropriately titled album, and it is truly an album in the classic sense—a collection of songs that come from the same time and place, inspired by the same muse. Reflective and introspective, it provides a glimpse at the soul of an artist and the depth of a songwriter. Full of hope and anticipation of the promise of another day, a new day, it is a pivotal point in the career of a touring musician. Whereas it is a departure for Zach Deputy, it is one that he feels confident his fans can relate to, but it isn’t the end in itself. Deputy’s multi-faceted diamond gets one side polished in this offering, and it is a side that will shine brightly for a new audience.

The Pines Rising out of the prairies of the Midwest, The Pines are one of the most distinct and powerful indie-rock/Americana groups to hit the national scene in years. Emerging from the same Minneapolis music world that spawned such notable acts as The Jayhawks, The Replacements and Bob Dylan, The Pines have gathered a stunning line-up of musical talent, in both their live shows and on record, that has gained them a faithful and growing following. Frontmen Benson Ramsey and David Huckfelt share a common musical language rooted in the songs and songwriters of their native Iowa, while each bringing a distinct voice and sensibility to the sound that Rolling Stone senior writer David Fricke called “quietly gripping” stark-country. The mysterious sound of The Pines fuses Benson’s ethereal, otherworldly, heart-piercing songs with David’s earthy, darkly romantic and rough-hewn visionary tales. With masterful guitar work, beautiful vocals and the graceful keyboard and vocal additions of Benson’s brother Alex Ramsey, the core of The Pines’ sound captivates and elevates with rare intimacy.
Surprisingly, David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey actually began their musical partnership in Arizona, where they both lived in a Mexican barrio and first began playing together. The son of Greg Brown’s producer and sideman Bo Ramsey, Benson was reared on folk and blues music and continues to let those influences shine, even on louder electric songs. David also had a deep love for traditional music, and together the two of them started crafting songs that evoke the ancient, while incorporating newer rock and pop sounds.
Committing to a musical career together, Benson and David returned to their Midwestern roots and moved to Minneapolis, where they slowly grew their band to include banjo player Michael Rossetto (Spaghetti Western String Co.), drummer J.T. Bates (Michel Portal, John Gorka), bassist James Buckley (Ed Harcourt, Daniel Johnston, Dosh) and Benson’s brother Alex Ramsey on keyboards.
Creating quite a buzz around the Twin Cities and across the Upper Midwest, The Pines caught the attention of acclaimed indie label Red House Records and signed with them in 2007, releasing their breakout album Sparrows in the Bell, named one of the top roots releases of the year by Q Magazine. The Pines wowed audiences at the 2008 South By Southwest (SXSW) and were named one of the musical highlights by CMT.com. They followed up this success with Tremolo, an album that garnered rave reviews in magazines like Rolling Stone and got airplay on tastemaker stations such as KCRW and The Current. It landed them coveted performances on Daytrotter.com and Bob Harris’ popular BBC show, winning them new fans across North America and Europe. A great live act whether performing as a stripped-down trio (David Huckfelt, Benson Ramsey and Alex Ramsey) or as a full rock band, The Pines’ devoted cult following and has led them to share the stage with such diverse acts as Bon Iver, Mavis Staples, The Arcade Fire, Iris DeMent, Mason Jennings and Spider John Koerner. The Pines just finished a North American tour with Mason Jennings in twenty-five cities, opening for him and playing in his band.

Most so-called “trivia nights” consist of either an MP3J reading Trivial Pursuit cards in between bad music, or a bunch of people staring at TVs with buzzers in hand. Our quiz burns through nearly 70 multimedia questions in two exciting hours. The quizmaster gets to know the players, and smack talk flying around in all directions is pretty much par for the course.
